How children respond<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to a pandemic\u00a0<\/span>is influenced<\/span>\u00a0in part by<\/span>\u00a0pre-existing vulnerabilit<\/span>ies<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>contextual issues related to t<\/span>heir\u00a0<\/span>pandemic<\/span>\u00a0experiences<\/span>, and family functioning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>his\u00a0<\/span>presentation<\/span>\u00a0highlights<\/span>\u00a0data from two studies\u00a0<\/span>investigating\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>osttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in<\/span>\u00a0children and parents\u00a0<\/span>during\u00a0<\/span>pandemic<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>disasters<\/span>.\u00a0 Study 1 investigates<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>PTSD<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>an international study of\u00a0<\/span>398 parents with<\/span>\u00a0varying<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>disease-containment experiences<\/span>\u00a0following the H1N1 who<\/span>\u00a0completed the U<\/span>CLA<\/span>\u00a0P<\/span>TSD<\/span>\u00a0Reaction Inde<\/span>x-<\/span>Caregiver<\/span>\u00a0Version and the PTSD Checkl<\/span>ist Civilian Version<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Criteria for PTSD\u00a0<\/span>was met<\/span>\u00a0in 30% of isolated\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0quarantined<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>children, and 25% of quarantined\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0isolated parents.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>solation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0quarantine<\/span>d children<\/span>\u00a0were more likely to meet the clinical cutoff for PTSD<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>than those\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>ithout these\u00a0<\/span>experiences<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span><\/span>p<\/span><\/span>\u00a0=.001<\/span>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>tudy 2 us<\/span>es<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>qualitative data<\/span>\u00a0from caregivers<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to conduct\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0textual analysis of 356 responses about how\u00a0<\/span>COVID-19\u00a0<\/span>impacted<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>family functioning<\/span>.\u00a0 Two coders identified themes and sub-themes using a grounded theory approach\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>inter<\/span>rater reliability\u00a0<\/span>=\u00a0<\/span>.93<\/span>)<\/span>. Themes\u00a0<\/span>point to\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>altered<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ecological\u00a0<\/span>context that defined physical and psychological safety for these\u00a0<\/span>families<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>during COVID<\/span>. T<\/span><\/span>he<\/span>se<\/span>\u00a0combined<\/span>\u00a0findings<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>indicate that pandemic<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and disease-containment\u00a0<\/span>responses\u00a0<\/span>may create a condition that\u00a0<\/span>families and children\u00a0<\/span>experience as\u00a0<\/span>traumatic<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>highlights important intervention targets to promote recovery.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”3_4,1_4″ _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_text_color=”#E46708″ text_orientation=”right”]<\/p>\n Ginny Sprang, Ph.D.,<\/span><\/b> is a professor in the College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Kentucky, and executive director of the UK Center on Trauma and Children. She is the Principal Investigator of the SAMHSA funded Category II Secondary Traumatic Stress Innovations and Solutions Center, the Category III Child and Adolescent Trauma Treatment and Training Institute, and Chair Emeritus of the Secondary Traumatic Stress Collaborative group. She has or currently holds national leadership positions in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network as a steering committee member and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies Special Interest Group Chair for the Terrorism and Disaster committee.
