Eating Disorders and Eating Disorders: Shared Endophenotype and Its Implications for Treatment
In recent years, two diagnostic families have attracted increased interest from numerous research groups. These are the common threads in the presentation of Eating Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Shared characteristics such as poor social cognition, low central coherence, and cognitive rigidity suggest a possible shared endophenotype between both diagnostic groups. This similarity has forced specialized treatments for Eating Disorders to restructure the management of these patients, especially in settings such as inpatients and Day Hospitals.
This special panel aims to review the state of the art, present some of the findings from research conducted in patients with eating disorders with and without autistic traits, and finally share the new treatment guidelines for cases of eating disorders and ASD.
In the first presentation, Eva Rubio Buieno, Neurodevelopment Coordinator at ITA, will present a narrative review of the endophenotypic characteristics shared between Autism Spectrum Disorders and Eating Disorders.
Next, Ana Rodriguez, Assistant Clinical Director at Clariane, will present an empirical study on the personality characteristics of a group of patients with eating disorders and autism spectrum disorders.
In the next presentation, Montserrat Guarda, clinical coordinator of Eating Disorders at ITA, will present the new guide for adapting eating disorder treatment to people with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Laura Reina, director of ITA Málaga, will close the panel with a case study of a patient with an eating disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
